Team Scoring

The league uses a handicap-based scoring system designed to create fair competition between climbers of different skill levels.

Rather than rewarding only the strongest climbers with the highest team contribution, scores are normalized based on what is reasonably expected for each climber’s current grade.

This allows climbers of all abilities to contribute equally when performing well relative to their own level.

How Team Scoring Works

Step 1: Raw Weekly score

Each climbers earns a raw climbing score based on:

  • Route difficulty

  • Flash bonuses

  • Attempt deductions

  • Completed climbs

This is the climbers actual weekly score

Step 2: Individual expected weekly score

Each climbing grade has an expected weekly raw score.

This represents the performance level expected from a climber at that grade.

Step 3: Handicap Normalization

Each climber’s raw score is converted into a normalized team contribution using the following formula:

Adjusted Team Contribution = (Raw Weekly Score ÷ Expected Weekly Score) × 400

Interpretation

  • Below 400 - The team underperformed expectations

  • 400 - The team preformed as expected

  • Above 400 - The team exceeded expectations

This gives every team a clear weekly benchmark regardless of roster composition.

Step 4: Team Size adjustment

Because teams may have between 3 and 5 climbers, scores are adjusted so larger teams do not automatically have an advantage.

This ensures fair comparison across all team sizes.

Weekly Team Benchmark

This means team scoring is based on performance relative to expected ability. Not absolute climbing strength.

A fully participating team where every climber performs exactly at expected level will normalize to 400 team points for the week

Step 5: Climber Grades

Each climber is assigned a league climbing grade.

Starting Grades are determined using registration information including:

  • Preferred climbing style

  • Consistent flash ability

  • Highest completed grade

Grades are used to determine:

  • Expected weekly score

  • Handicap normalization

  • Climbing grade review recommendations
